Kemp Ridley Turtle

On October 6, 2005  Susan Boyle was out boating with friends from out of state on bayside. When she spotted a turtle. As they moved closer to see the turtle before it swam away she noticed the turtle was entangled in a lobster trap. The Styrofoam float was missing, but the rope was still attached to the trap, anchoring the turtle.

Susan called Poseidon Towing & Salvage and spoke with Captain Barrie McCune, Captain McCune gave Susan the phone numbers that she needed to get help for the turtle. Captain McCune contacted Park Ranger Dave Fowler who was in the area.

However before the Park Ranger could get to the turtle. Captain Barrie McCune and Diver Chuck Norris jumped into action. As soon as they got on scene Chuck  jumped in to cut the trap's line freeing the turtle.

Chuck Norris and Ranger Dave Fowler managed to get the turtle aboard and flipped it over onto it's back. They were able to cut all the fishing line off the turtle's limbs. There was discoloration in one of it's flippers and a tumor on it's other and one of it's back flippers had been partially severed.

At that point Captain McCune called the Turtle Hospital in Marathon.

The Turtle Hospital told us they would meet us at the dock. Captain McCune , Susan, Chuck and Ranger Dave Fowler kept the turtle comfortable until Whitney Crowder from the Turtle Hospital arrived in the turtle ambulance and took the turtle off in a stretcher.

Pilot Whale

Right offshore in Upper Matecumbe 3 Pilot Whales were in the shallow waters and swimming in circles. The largest Pilot Whale "Poseidon" was guided into a sling and strapped to the side of Poseidon II, Captain Barrie McCune of Poseidon Towing and Salvage proceeded with care to bring this gentle giant in for medical treatment.

Dolphin's Plus Facility were standing by at the dock of Papa Joe's for Captain McCune and the Pilot Whale named Poseidon to have him transported to Dolphin's Plus for rehabilitation.

Sadly, Poseidon died a short time later and the other 2 Pilot Whales were released back into the wild.
